Pet Weight Loss Program

An estimated 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. The negative effects of extra weight is well documented in dogs and cats. We used to think that fat just took up space and didn't do anything else, but in the past 15-20 years, we've learned that fat is very active!  It acts as a source of constant inflammation in your pet's body, increasing the risk for arthritis, kidney disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and respiratory disease.

Obesity also decreases your pet's life expectancy. According to one study, dogs who are lean, on average, live approximately 1.8 YEARS longer than those who are overweight. That's 1.8 years of extra tail wags and kneaded biscuits that we want you to have!

Weight loss is challenging, but we're here to help! If you're ready to get serious about your pet's weight loss, please contact us via Facebook or email (info@reidsvillevet.com) to enroll in our pet weight loss program.

What happens next?

Step 1. Once your pet is enrolled, we will send you a detailed questionnaire to complete about your pet's current food consumption and lifestyle.

Step 2. Once you return your questionnaire, we will schedule an in-clinic consultation. During this appointment, your veterinarian will first evaluate your pet's overall health, to ensure that they are healthy enough to undergo a weight loss program. This will always involve a comprehensive physical exam, and may involve additional diagnostics if necessary. After your pet has been medically cleared, your veterinarian will design an individualized weight loss plan for your pet and discuss this plan with you in detail. Your plan will include a specific food recommendation, information on appropriate treats, and recommended exercise for your pet.

Step 3. After your in-clinic consultation, it's time to implement your plan! But you won't be alone. We will keep in touch with helpful tips and tricks, and we are available to help you with any challenges you encounter.

Step 4. Every 2-4 weeks, we will schedule in-clinic weigh-ins. These are important points to check in and make sure that your pet's weight loss program is going smoothly! If your pet is not losing weight, your veterinarian will make specific recommendations for how to alter your plan.

Step 5. Keep working at it until your pet has achieved their weight loss goal!

  • "Wow! Thanks to all the staff at Anderson Vet Clinic. I feel like you all truly love what you do! My kitty, Lola and I always have such a pleasant experience when we come in. Fortunately, it’s usually just for a check-up, but I would not leave Lola in anyone else’s hands but yours. Thank you for your caring commitment!"
